Navajos and Hopis

For centuries these two North American Indian tribes have lived side by side in harmony. The Hopis are farmers who farm in the lowlands and live on the top of Mesas. Since time immemorial the Hopi people have lived and maintained their sacred covenant with Maasaw, the ancient caretaker of the earth, to live as peaceful and humble farmers respectful of the land and its resources.

The Navajos from the 16th through the 20th centuries were semi nomadic people. Their extended kinship groups had seasonal dwelling areas to accommodate livestock, agriculture, and gathering practices. Their traditional dwellings are six sided hogans.

In Tuba Cuty where we are visiting our Navajo extended family, these two tribes live together in harmony often intermarrying.
