From the photo you get the idea that the Penguin is the name of a vessel. A Lugger on the other hand refers to an oyster catcher vessel used by the Torres Strait Islands in Northern Queensland. They would use it to send divers down to collect oyster shells to make buttons and other inlays. Currently this particular Lugger is one of the last of its kind and is being salvaged and rebuilt at the Queensland Maritime Museum.
After our visiting the Museum for the 80th anniversary of the formation of the US Seventh Fleet, we saw that the museum is mostly run by volunteers. Well, since we are retired, I decided to raise my hand and offer a hand. So currently I am working with the team to rebuild the Penguin with the help of one of the few Shipwrights who know how to build a wooden ship from scratch. Not one for heavy lifting, my job is to help on media development and produce a short fund raising documentary. Stay tuned for more information as the rebuild continues!
