Keep to the Left!

Most of the world knows Australians drive on the left side of the road, like the British. For American trained drivers switching over from right to left can be a bit daunting. This is especially true when climbing into the driver’s seat which is located on the right side of the front. Fortunately the gas and break peddles are in the same orientation.

At first you may feel panicked by pulling into the roadway. Not to worry, our mantra was “keep to the left… keep to the left…. keep to the left”. You get used to the differences after a while. By now we are ok with the way people drive and it seems normal to us.

What is interesting is that driving on the left side also gets translated to the way people physically move about. In the department stores, the escalators are on the left to go up and right to go down. Walking over pedestrian bridges the same rules apply. Keep to the left!
