While Boxing Day roots may be British, (boxing up the leftovers and giving them to the poor with presents the day after Christmas), Australians have taken Boxing Day and made it their own, creating unique traditions for the day.
In Australia, Boxing Day generally revolves around: watching cricket, watching the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, hitting the Boxing Day sales, and gathering with family and friends for a meal. (Their Boxing Day is like our Black Friday after Thanksgiving.)
For this Boxing Day, Aunty Fran invited us for lunch in Cooperoo, with her daughter Rowena and son-in-law Graham. On her veranda we enjoyed cold drinks and special cookies made by Graham’s daughter-in-law Emma in the shape of a tiny bear clutching an almond.
After a lovely lunch of lasagna and Greek salad we were presented with a traditional English trifle desert with fresh blueberries from Rowena’s garden in Maleny. We had a most delightful time sharing experiences and favorite places around the world, and planning future get togethers. Thanks Fran, Rowena and Graham for embracing us into your family and making us feel at home.
