I am sure you are wondering what I’m going to talk about? Let me get to that in a bit. In the afternoon we took a walking tour of the old city of Edinburgh and learned a considerable amount regarding its long history. We saw the castle, St. Giles church where Queen Elizabeth II lay in state, and various significant sites.
With regard to the above title we learned from our tour guide that the city council made a law in the 17th century that your excrement could not be tossed out the window into the street until after 10pm at night. It just so happened that the pubs closed at the same time. Drunks walking down the lanes would often face an unwelcome shower from the windows above! That’s how that famous expression came into being.
On a more serious note, Sir Walter Scott is the famous and beloved city son. He has a lovely city monument to him in the city in the form of an enormous church spire in the spirit of Rosslyn Chapel. It is very impressive and can be seen from many parts of the city.
And of course J.K. Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter book in the city. No tour of Edinburgh would be complete without a visit to the official Harry Potter store.
