Rain, a Chapel and a Yacht

The old saying “Red sky in the morning is a shepards warning” came true yesterday. A lovely red sunrise greeted us at our hotel. But we put on our warm weather gear and rain coats and headed for Rosslyn Chapel about 40 minutes away past Edinburgh.

The Chapel was founded in 1446 by Sir William St. Clair. From the outside it is a cute little chapel by church standards but once inside you are amazed by the inticate nature of the columns and carvings. The church is steeped in religious symbolism with carvings of Moses, devils, snakes and green men. There are even carvings of corn rows made 50 years before Columbus discovered corn and America! Could the Scottish knights have arrived in America before Columbus? If you are ever in the area this is a must visit and was featured in the Di Vinci code movie.

Afterwards we went to visit the old Queen Elizabeth yacht the Britannia. It is now permanently docked in Edinburgh. Our visit gave us a fascinating look at this floating palace and the very expensive appointments and state rooms. We also enjoyed a tea and sandwich on board in the special dining room created for tourists.

For dinner we met Ellen Barone. She is a friend of our friend in Santa Fe, Jan Butchofsky. We had dinner at “The Wee Restaurant” right next to Queens Ferry, where Mary Queen of Scott’s used to travel across the river to Edinburgh. Although a very wet day it was a beautiful day too.
