Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock is a world famous monolithic geographic feature in the middle of the Australian desert. This is a sacred place for the Aborigines.
The mountain is about a thousand feet tall and can be seem from miles away in the surrounding flat desert. In the morning we hiked a 10 mile trek around the base of the sandstone monolith. We saw sacred outcroppings, water holes snd cave paintings.
In the evening after dark we visited the Field of Lights created by artist Bruce Munro. It was an impressive display of thousands of fiber optic lights under a very bright Milky Way. By the end of the day we had hiked over 25,000 steps!
