In the smack dab middle of the country is Mt. Uluru. An aboriginal sacred site, this mountain rose out of the surrounding sand over 500 thousand years ago. In order to get here we flew from rainy Sydney to the airport nearby Mt.Uluru at Ayers Rock Resort.
The area is a National Park. The limited accomodations consist of three main hotels, some dining facilities and a small town square. Shuttle buses take you around the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and back and forth from the airport. In the evening we enjoyed a champagne reception in the bush while watching the sunset on Uluru. The colors were absolutely amazing. Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious dinner and spectacular star walk under a canopy of shimmering Southern Hemisphere stars. Above us was the famous Southern Cross constellation.
