A Forest of Cardón Cactus.

Jan. 13, 2022

We took a drive north of where we are staying through high mountains and then through a spectacular Cardón cactus forest. It was beautiful seeing these majestic giants. The saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is one of the defining plants of the Mexican Sonoran Desert. These plants are large, tree-like columnar cacti that develop branches (or arms) as they age. The first arms develope after 50 years. The ones we saw were likely over 150 years old. See if you can spot the eagle on the bottom photo.
