If you happen to be in Rome on a Sunday, the thing to do is go to the Vatican for mass. Then at noon see the Pope at his papal office window addressing the people in St. Peter’s Square. We did both today and it was a moving experience. The homily was about vision and pity and how we should all learn empathy. The Pope at his Sunday address to the people talked about having pity on the immigrants and to help strive to give them dignity. He acknowledged many of the faithful groups from Peru and Spain in the audience and he wrapped up his talk by asking the we don’t forget to pray for him too.
Afterwards, we took a final stroll through the city. Stopping at the famous Chiampini gelato restaurant for some out of this world gelato. The dark chocolate melted in your mouth. Then we worked our way to the Spanish steps where throngs of people were out enjoying the lovely warm afternoon sun. Up at the Borgese park we had a Cinema Paradiso moment seeing kids running around chasing a bubble maker. A perfect ending to a perfect Italian vacation. We are sad to be leaving tomorrow.
