Pompeii, a Still Life Captured in Time

Sept, 28, 2021

This morning we anchored in Sorrento and took the tenders to the city. Italy still requires bubble travel so we had to do a tour with a group to see anything. We selected a tour of Pompeii.

Our tour guide, Augustino gave us a lovely detailed description of the geology on the one hour drive to Pompeii. Once there, we had to show our Covid vaccination cards to the guards to get into the grounds. The entry is deceptively modest looking until you get inside of the ancient city that has been two thirds excavated. You really get blown away when you realise the huge volcanic blast covered the city in roughly 50 feet of ash and pumice. Thanks to the burying of the city, so much of Roman culture has been preserved as a snapshot of Roman life in 79AD. Pompeii was only discovered in the 19th century when archeological work began.

The tour of Pompeii reminded us that life can change in a matter of minutes and days. Our trip through Greece and Italy reminds us that civilizations don’t last forever.
