Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and so today we just got a little glimps of it. Arriving in the port of Naxos we saw Mount Etna in the distance rising some 10,000 feet. Naxos was established 700 years AD by the Greeks. It was a cloudy day but we could see some small puffs of smoke from Etna’s top.
Our tour today was to do a wine tasting at the Gambino family winery (no relation to any family in New York). Apparently their wines are grown at a much higher elevation taking advantage of the favorable climate in the shadow of the volcano. Interestingly they do not water or fertilize their grape plants.
The Gambino winery let us sample several wines and included a lovely wine pairing plate of cheeses, vegetables, and meats. We really liked their white wines. And Brenda really enjoyed their reds.
