Sept 28
King Kamehameha I unified all the Hawaiian Island in the early 1800’s. Subsequent rulers consolidated their rule and built a wonderful palace from material imported from the mainland. We visited the Iolani Palace today. Unfortunately for the rulers, American businessmen pressured the kings to cede control to them. While at one time Hawaii was a sovereign country it was acquired by the United States as a territory and then became the 50th state. While these island have become Americanized, the Hawaiian culture is still very strong.
