All Aboard

Sept 22

This sail away morning Brenda recalled a restaurant near Union Square called Sears. “The lines used to be out the door”, she said. Well sure enough the restaurant was still there, actually since 1938! So we gave it a try.

By 2 o’clock our van came to take us to Pier 27, all ten suitcases and two humans. Brenda stood on American soil one last time and said a Navajo prayer. Boarding was a breeze and we settled in for dinner and the sail away.

As night began to fall, the famous San Francisco fog rolled in on little cat feet and began to consume the city. We played Tony Bennet’s “I Left my Heart in San Francisco” on my iphone as we tearfully looked at the city. By 8:30 pm the lines were dropped and we pulled away from the pier. The city receded from the stern, the city lights swallowed up by the fog. Then a bit later in the darkness, the Golden Gate bridge lights suddenly appeared on top of us. It vanished as quickly as it appeared with the fog horns mourning in the distance.
