I Shall Return

These are the famous words of General Douglas MacArthur when he left the Philippines after the Japanese invaded Asia in World War II. He barely escaped with his life to Australia.

Here in Brisbane, he established his Allied Command to fight the Japanese in Asia with the help of the Australians. The Australians provided important resources and food to the rest of the Western Allied troops in Europe, North Africa and Asia.

In downtown Brisbane, MacArthur’s headquarters office is preserved as a museum and provides a fascinating look at the vital role the Australians played during the war.
