Barossa Valley Wine Country

After we docked in Adelaide we hopped aboard a bus to tour the famous Barossa Wine Region. The region is well known for their big bold red wines. After an hour drive, we arrived at Seppeltfield Winery. This is one of the oldest wineries in Barossa established in the 1800’s by German immigrants. The property is located in a lovely setting of date palms surrounded by vineyards. The buildings are typical Australian Queenslander style. The best wine we tasted was their white Vermentino and Grenache. Interestingly they have bottles of rare port that have been bottled for more than 150 years. They offered us their 1922 bottle of port but the price was a little steep for our blood!

We then drove on for a lovely lunch at a country store and imbibed more wine. Jacob’s Creek winery was then next stop. There we were introduced to Barossa wine making. It turns out the local wineries are changing their grape growing varieties to more heat tolerant grapes of the South Italian regions. Global climate change even has affected this area. After more wine tasting we were pretty satiated. All in all it was a very lovely day and we had a lovely nap back to the ship.
