Wines, Birds and Fire

Margaret River is a famous wine growing region in Western Australia. It is mostly known for their white wines due to the temperate climate. We visited Voyager Winery to experience their Dutch looking buildings and lovely gardens. The Dutch connection is no accident. The Dutch actually discovered Western Australia in the early 1600’s.

The Margaret River area also has a wild bird sanctuary. We toured the park and saw a bird show of owls and raptors. The birds were magnificent in their stately poses. And we also learned about the extraordinary abilities of the birds to see small items at great distances.

As the day progressed we became alarmed to see and smell huge clouds of smoke. We made tracks to the beach to escape the smoke. From the beachfront restaurant we saw scary black clouds approaching. Asking the patrons about the smoke we were told it was just a controlled burn. We were glad to hear that but gained a better appreciation for what it must have been like last year when wild fires burned thousands of acres.
