Another Drive Around Skye

Some of the single lane roads

The Island of Skye has many peninsula’s jutting out into the North Atlantic. It makes for very dramatic scenery and challenging driving on the single lane roads. Nonetheless, each corner presents you with glorious scenery of green landscapes, rugged mountains, and loads of sheep grazing.

We tried to visit the Duvegan Castle but at this time of year the castles and various smaller attractions are closed. So we headed off to the end of the point at Neist Point Light House. The weather cleared and presented low hanging sunshine on the cliffs. Here in the winter the sun basically sets at 4 pm and it is dark by 5 o’clock. Before dark we stopped by the Talisker Distillery for a tasting. There was a lovely bottle of 43 year old whisky at a mere 3,500£ which indicated how valued the whisky is in knowledgeable circles.

Thankfully we are staying in a lovely cozy hotel called the Cullin Hills Hotel that overlooks the town of Portree, across the bay. You get a clear sense of the oncoming weather as our view is to the Southwest where most storms originate. This morning the wind is howling at 40 mph and the rain is pouring down.
