Tom and I are settling into our beach house in Los Barriles MX. He’s claimed the dining room table as his editing desk, and I’ve taken over the table on the deck. After a morning walk on the beach to welcome the sunrise, we‘ve had breakfast and are happy campers.
The town of Los Barriles reminds me of a Navajo Rez town with dusty dirt tracks for streets, and funky little yards full of old trucks, tires, and other discards of life. Except here the Mexican homes and palapas are interspersed with Gringo bungalows and nice retirement homes. Los Barriles is a burgeoning enclave of expats who either arrived here thirty years ago or are arriving here now to escape the crazy landscape back home. They’re all nice people looking for a more peaceful life.
We have friends that have lived here for thirty years – Annalisa Layton and her partner Bob (now Roberto) from the Bay Area. Yesterday Annalisa took us to the town’s annual art show and introduced us to a lot of her very talented and interesting friends. Last night we watched the sunset from their 360-degree rooftop deck with her sister Debby Layton and enjoyed a dinner of homemade chicken mole on the terrace.
We could get used to this!
