At Sea – Swells and Waves

Nov. 9, 2021

Another day at sea and without landmarks it is hard to determine where we are. Only our Weather Underground App for some reason can track us. So am adding that as a photo.

But one thing that you notice on board is that there is a big difference between swells and waves. Waves tend to be the shorter burst of water action. They really don’t have a big affect on the overall motion of the ship. As long as we are cruising forward at 17 knots we hardly feel the effect. Swells on the other are big long undulating waves that cross the ship at different angles. Swells cross the ocean for many miles. These really have a profound effect on the rolling motion of the ship. I guess it is a little like life. If you have a set direction that you are steadily moving towards you won’t be too affected by small waves. However, look out for the swell events in life that can push you around.
