Is Gaudi Gaudy?

Oct 29, 2021

We decided today to explore the life of Gaudi in more detail. Gaudi was a very important architect in Barcelona in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Many of his buildings are famous in this city for their rather unusual organic shapes. It turns out Gaudi was very heavily influenced by the surrounding nature, including Montserrat which we visited yesterday. He felt that architecture should incorporate natural and sometimes mythical characteristics like the slaying of the dragon by St. George.

We saw a historical film about him and toured the Park Güell which contains many of his buildings and gardens. If you tour the park you will find yourself immersed in an Alice in Wonderland world of twisty organic structures. It makes sense now why the famous La Sagrada Cathedral looks the way it does. Interestingly the Cataloneon people of Barcelona embrace Gaudi as reflective of their creative, artistic and independent spirit.
