Thirteen years ago I put my 8th-grade daughter on a plane to Spain for a 2-week home stay and study program. Ever since she fell in love with Cádiz and regaled me with its charms, I’ve wanted to visit this historic town and retrace her footsteps. Today I finally did and we were well-rewarded.
Cádiz is an ancient port city in the Andalucia region of southwestern Spain surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, and continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years. Founded by the Phoenicians in 1,100 BC and coveted for its strategic location by the Romans, Carthaginians, and North African Muslims, the cobblestone streets are rich with traces of many cultures.
Today Tom and I followed Kimberly’s map to her favorite squares, the massive Cádiz Cathedral, and a fascinating archeological museum, before enjoying the most authentic flamenco we’ve found anywhere in Spain at the La Cava “flamenco cave.”
This Andalusian jewel is definitely on our come-back list for its charm, culture, and proximity to Seville and the sherry region of Jerez.
