Etruscans came before the Romans

October 21, 2021

Last night we had a wonderful dinner at Giulios. We were driven there by Luca a wonderful Roman cab driver who we used earlier in the day. He picked us up from our hotel at 6:30pm and drove us around to see the Garibaldi hill with a beautiful view of the city. He also bought us an anniversary bottle of wine! A lovely man from a lovely city.

This morning we visited the National Etruscan museum. Etruscans occupied this area before the Romans some 600 years BC. They supposely taught the Romans the alphabet and showed them how to construct aqueducts and buildings. Unfortunately the Roman Empire wiped out all traces of them. The only thing left of the Etruscans are the things found in their tombs. And what beautiful things have been found. The centerpiece of the museum is a life sized clay fired sculpture of a married couple laying on a couch. Their ashes were inside when the piece was discovered in their tomb. It is an amazing artwork which had to be fired in a huge clay oven.
