Monte Cassino

Oct 17, 2021

Leaving Sorrento was a bit sad for us as we loved being by the ocean and the quaint town. But leave we must to get to our next stop. They say all roads lead to Rome and that’s exactly where we were headed. But along the way there is a Benedictine Monastary high on a hilltop overlooking the route to Rome.

The Nazi’s used Monte Cassino as a defensive position and prevented the allied troops from reaching Rome. During the Second World War it was bombed by the Americans and completely destroyed. Over 50,000 allied troops were killed trying to capture it. Eventually it was Polish troops who managed to reach the top and secure the Monastery.

Today, Monte Cassino has been completely rebuilt and is a place of PAX (peace) and quiet reflection. Brenda and I were moved by the extent of the reconstruction effort and the great beauty of the location. The tranquil moment gave us a chance to reflect on our own life journey and where we are heading.
