Siena is Amazing

Sept 30, 2021

We are staying just outside the city because they don’t allow cars in the city center any longer. So we parked down the hill and took a special 5 level escalator up to the high street level of the city. The entire parking for the day cost $20 Euros.

We hired a guide to show us around so that when our friends Wendy and John come for Brenda’s birthday and we return to Siena for the day we can be sure to cover the highlights of the city. One of them was walking around the Campo where the hold the spectacular horse race once a year. In this small city there are seventeen districts that are eligible to complete. Around 30,00 people pack the Campo square each year, except during Covid.

Then we went to see the Duomo church, the big cathedral in town. Our guide showed us a very special treat. The floor of the Duomo has flat horizontal marble carvings depicting many stories from the Bible and Mythology. They only reveal these for several days around October and then cover them up the rest of the year to protect them.

All in all a great day with a very experienced guide who knew what to do in town, where to get the best baked goods and where to see the major attractions. John and Wendy, you will have a great experience when we come back together.
