Don’t Trifle with Truffles

Sept 22, 2021

After Venice our ship sailed back to Croatia to the pretty port of Rovinj. They say it rivals Dubrovnik in terms of popularity. A lovely hilltop church greeted me on a much cooler morning as I had Eggs Benedict (sorry Clive I had to show this). We took a tender boat onto shore and loaded up on buses to see the quaint town of Motovun.

Motovun was founded during prehistoric times and later occupied by the Romans and Venetians. In the valley below the Venetians cultivated oak trees to be used in the building of ships and supports for the buildings in the city of Venice. Whenever you see the winged lion figure on statues and sculptures that means the Venetians were there.

For lunch we were treated to a special lunch. The region is famous for truffles and they export a huge amount of two varieties of white truffles and black truffles to the rest of the world. They are very proud of their truffles and the Zignate farm restaurant claims to have the best truffles in the world. Our lunch consisted of truffle salami and cheese followed by pasta in truffle sauce, beef cheeks in truffle sauce, and finally truffle ice cream. Combined with a rather snobby wait staff, the experience made us feel rather truffled-out.
