Hadrian’s Wall

Close to the Scottish border is a great wall that was built by the Romans around 100AD. It stretches from the British East coast all the way to the West coast. It is approximately 80 miles long. At one time it stood at nearly 10 feet high.

Today the wall is a mere shell of a structure at approximately 3 feet high. It hadn’t worn down, it was basically picked apart by the locals to build their homes and sheep walls.

We stopped for at a tour at Birdoswald which was a fort constructed by the Romans to service the wall. It had a population of over 1000 and lasted nearly 300 years.
