Stones, Moss & Lichen

One of the first things you notice in the Lake District is the amount of stone walls everywhere. You see them as the boundaries between various properties and keeping the sheep in the pastures. The sheer volume of stones used is almost unimaginable. The walls are usually piled several stones high. Here, there must be millions of stones used in this way. Even when you drive past huge mountains you see these same walls climbing steadily and straight up the side of mountains themselves. The amount of effort it would have taken boggles the mind.

Added to the stones, the amount of moisture in the air is prodigious. What this does is allow moss to grow all over the stones, on roofs and sides of buildings and even on trees themselves. Lichen too thrive here. The impression you get is a beautiful scene dotted with splats of color like a natural canvas. It all is really a feast for the eyes.
