Cricket, an International Sport

Yesterday our friends Rowena and Graham came for a visit for lunch and a swim in our pool. In passing, I asked about the game of Cricket being played at Gabba Stadium nearby. Graham and Rowena kindly explained the nuances of the game that has been known to last 5 days! I am not going to explain all what I learned here. However, Rowena sent me the below explanation which I can attest is about right. After that I have written a brief history of the sport.

The earliest reference to Cricket is in the mid-16th century. Widely known as England’s summer sport, cricket is now played all over the world, from West Indies in the American continent to Australia in Oceania. Interestingly, its name came from the Middle Dutch word, “Kricke,” which simply means a ‘stick or a staff.’

I think I will just stick with lounging in the pool.
