Australia Day this year was on January 26th. It is most like our July 4th except that it falls at the end of their summer like Labor Day in the US. Most kids in Queensland head back to school soon after, where they are required to wear uniforms.
Nearby our apartment are two prestigious private schools, – Somerville House for girls, and St. Laurence College for boys. You’ll see their competing colors when school ends and they congregate near the bus station on their way home. Girls’ uniforms are bright green and the boys are purple. And in Australia’s bright sun, hats are also the rule. (They’re taught “No Hats; No Play” from a young age.)
We loved seeing the little girl in the middle leaving our building with her parents on her first day of school, and coming home all smiles in the afternoon.
