Right next door to where we are staying in Barilles is a Blue Flag Beach. These are unique worldwide beaches that are specially maintained by a non-profit organization founded in Denmark. Unfortunately there are no such beaches in the United States.
The iconic Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised voluntary awards for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators. In order to qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained.
Every morning we see Carlos Marquez and his crew cleaning and raking the beach. He told me this is the season when turtles nest. The Blue Flag Beach people will protect any eggs and hatch them for later release. Kudos to Carlos and his team.
