Santorini Once Went Boom

Sept 9, 2021

One of the things you notice when you arrive by ship is that you enter a very large bay. Looking closer you realize it is actually an enormous caldera, the largest in the world. Back in 1,700 BC it blew its top and scattered ash and pumice around the Mediterranean. They say a 25 meter tsunami wave (that’s 82 feet) hit Crete.

Today scenic towns dot the edge of the caldera like snow capped mountains. Picturesque in every way, this is a place that shows the power of nature but also the resilience of people.
